Imagine the Possibilities
First Aid is of extreme importance at BICC. We place immeasurable value on the good health and positive wellbeing of our students. This policy highlights procedures that will run throughout all school stages, including Early Years Foundation Stage.
The Aims of First Aid
Major and minor incidents can occur at any time and often without warning. Incidents can take many forms and can result in many outcomes. Each incident will be approached in accordance with the First Aid Policy and Management Framework which has been put into place. Should an incident occur, the pupil(s) affected will be immediately taken to the school physician; in his/her absence a relevant, qualified First Aider will be on hand to assist.
First Aid Roles
The role of the First Aider is to provide care and assistance after an accident or injury has occurred. These tasks could include providing emotional support, minimising further discomfort or damage and making the patient as comfortable as possible. The First Aider will not give treatment or administer medication; this will be done so by the school’s dedicated physician. Various members of staff will undertake First Aid training throughout the school year. First Aiders will be located in different areas and departments of the school in order to provide immediate assistance.
First Aid Kits
First Aid kits will be located in the school and will be checked and restocked on a regular basis. The kit will be clearly labelled ‘First Aid’ in a strong container, impervious to dusty or damp conditions. The contents of the first aid box will be readily available to anyone who needs to use them. The contents of the first aid kit will include the following items:
-A card with general First Aid guidance
-A supply of individually wrapped sterile adhesive dressings (plasters)
– Sterile eye pads with an attached bandage and triangular bandages (preferably sterile, but if not, a sterile covering appropriate for serious wounds should be included).
– Safety pins
-A selection of sterile wound dressings, various sizes
-Yellow clinical waste bag
-Resuscitation face shield
Existing Medical Conditions and Allergies
Pupils with specific medical problems, needs or allergies will need individualised care plans, which will be drawn up in consultation with parents, the school’s physician and relevant Head of Stage. Medication for pupils who need it during school hours will be stored in the school physician’s office and administered by the physician (dependent on circumstances). Details of such pupils will be circulated to all relevant members of staff.
The School will allow the administration of medicines under the written permission of parents/guardians. All medicines are kept in a locked and designated cupboard. Only designated staff or the physician may administer these medicines and a record is kept. In the lower School all medicines are administered by the physician. Pupils in the Upper School are given over the counter remedies (for headaches and the like), if parents have given prior consent.
Field Trips and Offsite Activities
In the event of a field trip, excursion or an offsite activity, a trained First Aider will always be present. A first aid kit will always also be accessible. Pupils with medical conditions and allergies will be identified and monitored throughout the event.
Recording Illness and Injuries
All visits to the school’s physician, injuries, accidents and details of medication given will be recorded, kept on file and reported to the pupil’s parents. Any First Aid administered will be recorded and an accident form will be sent home with the pupil. Parents will always be informed of any accidents and injuries more severe than a minor bump or abrasion.
Avoidance of Contagious Illnesses
Parents are asked to keep their child at home if they are ill or infectious and to call the school to inform the school of their absence. Vomiting and diarrhoea are particularly contagious in a school community; it is recommended that pupils suffering from vomiting or diarrhoea should be kept off school for a period of 48 hours since the last episode.
